Thank you very much for having submitted your abstracts for the Conference “From the Human Body to the Universe – Spatialities of Byzantine Culture” to be held at Uppsala University on May 18-21, 2017.
It is now possible to consult each other’s abstracts and a provisional program on this webpage. Some of you will notice that, based on the content of your abstract we ended up suggesting your participation in different sessions than your selected ones; please, do consult the new placements of your papers, as soon as possible, and let me know how you feel about them.
On this webpage you can also find a selection of resources and ideas for our discussion; this section (RESOURCES) will be regularly updated and enriched until May, hopefully with your own help. The proposed literature and other material aim to extend to a wide range of spatial approaches within the Byzantine and medieval studies and other academic fields, since our particular interests cover a variety of research areas. We would like to ask you to stay true to your own approach while being open to discussing it with the rest of us. It is fine to come to the conference with a working paper; our aim is to discuss the paper, give each other constructive feedback, understand other, different approaches, and evaluate their potential together.
In that direction, we will also have an opportunity for comparative discussions and evaluations; during the final plenary session on Sunday afternoon, Megan Cassidy-Welch (Ass. Professor of History at Monash University) will respond to all papers and she will sketch future opportunities for research in Byzantine spatial studies.
If you have any ideas of literature and other material for inspiration and creation of meaning, or any other suggestions you want to share with the rest of us, please, do not hesitate to either send them to me for uploading or write them directly on this blog.
As far as practicalities are concerned, due to the great number of participants (45 so far!) we had to do a favour to our accountant and hire a private company to help us organize the event. So, I would like to introduce to you the person in charge of the conference, Annica Hultfeldt from Akademikonferens. Annica and her colleagues will be contacting you from now on concerning your travel and other details. As they will explain, they follow a different planning system than the one we had so far. Thus, you will be asked to kindly:
1. register all your details at an online database (see REGISTRATION on the Main Menu of this webpage) and
2. purchase your flight tickets on your own, receiving reimbursement from us. We apologize for this change and we hope you are able to buy your tickets as soon as possible.
On this webpage you can also find plenty of information for planning your trip (venue, accommodation, travelling to/from Uppsala and Stockholm etc). I take this opportunity to remind you that speakers’ travel expenses and accommodation for 4 nights are covered by us. Our Department will also provide lunch on the 19th and 21st of May, a reception (on May the 18th), and a dinner (on May the 19th).
Aiming for an optimal conduct of our meeting, we would also like to request the following:
- Presentations must NOT take longer than 15 minutes; it's the only way to avoid parallel sessions and be able to discuss all together. We will still have plenty of time to discuss during the plenary session and our spending three days together; furthermore, we can use this webpage for exchange even after the conference and until publication of the proceedings.
- A draft of 1-2 pages must be submitted to us by the end of March 2017, so that our responder has time to read them and prepare. Drafts must clarify your methodology, approach and main conclusions.
